Frank Lloyd Wright's life was truly dedicated to the arts. He is known
today as one of the most innovative minds in architecture for the twentieth
century, and has often been noted as being a revolutionary for interior décor,
designing furnishings, fabrics, lamps, and other decorative pieces. Frank Lloyd
Wright's dedication toward innovation also found an outlet in the creative arts,
as he authored twenty books and numerous articles during his lifetime, mostly
on the subject of de-urbanizing America.
The home he built for himself. One of Frank Lloyd Wright's most cherished
masterpieces is the home he built for himself in Scottsdale, Arizona, known as
Taliesin West. Construction on Taliesin West began in 1937, with the intent
the home would be his personal winter residence. Wright's communion with
nature coupled with his belief that a home could be more than a simple shelter
from the elements were both exemplified in Taliesin West's design.
Taliesin West is open for tours during scheduled hours. There are several
different public tour options available at scheduled times that will give you a
unique perspective on Taliesin West as well as Frank Lloyd Wright. The most
popular tour option is the Ninety Minute Insights Tour, which explores the
restored living room where Wright hosted many private gatherings, as well as his
garden and bedroom. This tour also gives you the chance to sit on some of the
furnishings custom designed by Wright.
The Three Hour Behind The Scenes Tour takes you on an in depth journey
through Taliesin West, offering you the same experience as on the Insights
Tour, and also includes tea in the Dining Room and a tour of the Sun Cottage.
The One Hour Panorama Tour visits the Cabaret Theater, the Music Pavilion,
Wright's private office, and various outdoor features such as gardens and terraces.
There are also other tour options available that allow you to explore the grounds,
adjacent structures on the property, and various rooms inside the home. These
additional tour options include the Ninety Minute Desert Walk, the Two Hour
Desert Shelter Tour, and the Two Hour Night Lights on the Desert. Due to
the popularity and limited space available with the tours, it is advisable that you
make a reservation for the tours that interest you before your visit.
Frank Lloyd Wright's last design for an opera house. ASU Gammage,
located on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona is one of
the largest university-based performing arts auditoriums in the world. Wright's
last opera house design was originally planned to be built in Bagdad, Iraq. Having
worked on concept sketches for over two years, Wright died in 1959 before the
final blueprints were completed. Construction on ASU Gammage began in 1962.
